Is quantity over quality that important? I keep reading each new Clive Cussler novel with high hopes and end up being disappointed with the quality of writing.

Throw in a multitude of dangerous situations, add a character or two from another series and ask us to to suspend all disbelief?

Perhaps it's the fault of the readers for demanding new books constantly and not being willing to wait in-between novels. View all 6 comments.

Apr 18, Clinton Sites rated it liked it. My personal opinion - Cusslers collaborations do not reach the same heights as his individual novels.

It appears to me that the writing does not flow as seamlessly as in previous novels and the wisecracking between Dirk and Joe is forced as opposed to what you would expect between two old friends.

The saving grace is setting the story in the current middle-east situation. Apr 03, Mary Ann rated it really liked it Shelves: adult-fiction , suspense , adventure , ya , historical-fiction , fiction-preadult , While I've always enjoyed Mr.

Cussler's books, after exploring a variety of other authors I've added another reason in his favor. There is no foul language in Cussler's books, and the characters manage to express their frustrations through humor.

History has never been my favorite subject but Cussler presents in a palatable serving. Since many believe that water may become the new gold this story is thought provoking on an environmental plane as well as well as the 'good old boys looking out for While I've always enjoyed Mr.

A return to form for Clive Cussler, well supported by Graham Brown, a fine thriller author in his own right.

Great settings, lots of thrills and spills, and some fab one-liners. Loved Kurt and Joe. Sep 30, Beth rated it it was amazing.

My Take I gotta admit that I started this story, and then got bored. It was the same ol', same ol'. And I mean, really, what else did I expect?

Of course it's following the formula for a NUMA action suspense story!? It begins in BC with a very confusing, almost useless, prologue that really doesn't say much.

It continues this confusion with the interlude in I suspect this is why I got bored. I was too confused. To be honest, you could probably skip the prologues and move right into the part where Kurt appears.

Yeah, there's a sort of introduction before Kurt and Joe appear that sets up the conflict that sets it all in motion.

That contemporary intro didn't pull together for me either about the ship that sets off the toxic cloud. There's an interesting summary of back history on the military-industrial complex of Egypt.

The one that ruled the country from until the Rebellion in I do enjoy how Cussler weaves history into his contemporary stories.

That bit about the Italian spies was one of those tidbits that brings an extra depth to the overall story. I also enjoyed how enthusiastic Edo became and the way his contacts rallied around him.

One of Cussler's best books in quite a long time, for many reasons. Chief among them, for me at least, is the inclusion of Malta as a primary setting for what might be the first time ever in a Cussler book.

And then there's the downright nasty threat from a freaky, freaky ancient Egyptian weapon that's designed to put its victims into seemingly incurable comas Those ancient Egyptians meddled in things that really ought not to be meddled in.

Dirk Pitt: of course! NUMA Files: yep! Oregon Files: absolutely! Cussler provided an escape from the petty drama of high school.

He was my go-to when I needed adventure during my first round of college. I knew who to turn to when I found myself desperately needing an over the top action read in the weeks leading up to my vacation.

Clive Cussler delivered! I mean look at it! Thankfully the plot was fantastically action packed. Readers were provided multiple plots that melded together seamlessly, and included both historical and scientific points.

I loved how readers were exposed to both ancient Egyptian and Roman history. Eh, sure.. The stories are too over the top, the action scenes a tad too unbelievable, and the stories too similar.

Cussler has a formula that works and he has stuck to it through the decades. But I go into his books knowing, and even craving, these traits when I pick one up.

Dirk Pitt holds a special place in my heart. Are you a Cussler fan? Which series is your favorite? Let me know and happy reading!

They go to investigate, and find that everyone on the island is in a comatose state; soon after they meet an Italian Doctor, who survived the catastrophe.

This book is similar to what you would expect of an action movie. The good guys are heroic, but not in an unrealistic way, and they face enemies that have sinister plots.

There is a lot of action, which is one of the things that connects it to action movies, and the plot continues to expand as you read further into the book.

This book has many things to like about it. As mentioned earlier, there are unique characters, a good plot, and realistic details.

The characters and the plot are all created with different personalities, as they are in other Clive Cussler books, and the details are great.

This book will keep the readers hooked once they are started and will be enjoyed by many. Mar 29, Claudia rated it really liked it Shelves: z , books-by-cussler.

Then it's present day and NUMA is investigating a shipwreck off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa which has been struck with a mysterious illness when all the people literally drop dead in their tracks.

Only they're not dead, only in a deep coma. What forces NUMA to investigate is that some of them are the crew at their land base which are also affected.

Somehow connected to the mysterious illness is the sudden drought in the African countries bordering the Mediterranean.

Not just the normal arid desert but even oasis and wells are coming up dry. And the controller of both disasters in the making - the owner of Osiris Construction who is working to create another version of the Arab Spring but only this time, those leaders who were overthrown in the first one will be placed back in power with Osiris pulling the strings.

Of course, there is travelling about Europe and Africa. There are Egyptian antiquities. There are power brokers and brutal villains. Quests to find the answers in time to find a counter to the Black Mist of Death before the people of Lampedusa really die.

And to return the water to the underground aquifer before millions die of thirst. And there is a cameo of some characters from the Oregon Files on their own mission.

Small world. It's a relatively quick read and it starkly reminds the reader of the importance of water availability. Something too many take for granted.

A biological weapon has put a small island of Italians into a deep coma that would eventually lead to death, while simultaneously North Africa is experiencing a lowering of their water table and drying all sources of water.

These two seemingly unrelating events all go back to secret Egyptian terrorist organization and the only ones how can stop them is Kurt and Joe along with the Italian doctor Renata.

The book wasn't deep or complex like some may want but it's a fun read who those who have time. I enjoyed it and there were few "flaws" that I noticed but nothing that would stop me from giving it a good rating.

Now for those who have never read Cussler's novels or perhaps heard of him for the first time through the news, here's my opinion of him. He can appeal to all audiences as his books can cover any interest you have whether you like adventure, shootouts, exploration, science, etc.

His books can be read by a majority of ages as there is hardly any vulgar language and sexual situations more often occur in his earlier works. So whether you are 80 or 12 years old, you can rest assure it will enjoyable for all ages.

Parents shouldn't have too much worries about their children reading this. So if you enjoy a Indian Jones-type adventures of history, science and action, Clive Cussler is the way to go.

I look forward to reading more of his works as he had a great, creative mind. I chose this book while browsing for something to read at Meijer's.

Since I was going on vacation and would be traveling a lot, I wanted something that wasn't too deep but kept up a good pace - adventure, mystery, and exotic locations.

I also wanted a mass market sized paperback that would fit easily into my carry-on backpack. Alas, that was not to be.

I'm not too sure I'm a big fan of the inch taller version of the venerated mmpp publishers are filling bookshelves with these days for an extra I chose this book while browsing for something to read at Meijer's.

I'm not too sure I'm a big fan of the inch taller version of the venerated mmpp publishers are filling bookshelves with these days for an extra two bucks - but I digress.

However, Cussler and Brown deliver on other fronts - plot and setting - if only slightly. The pacing is good, but at times can seem breathless.

The characters always seem to be traveling from one place to another - Paris, Libya, Egypt, and islands in the Mediterranean - never staying in one place for too long.

The plot, also, seems to have too much going on. The authors have created a crime syndicate that wants to hold the world hostage in two-fold fashion, when one would have sufficed.

The biggest problem the novel has is the and, here, I struggle to find the right word - corny, hokey - is there a good way to say it? The two male characters, Kurt and Joe, have a tendency toward braggadocio that makes Donald Trump seem demure by comparison.

But I gave the novel three stars, which means that, in spite of its numerous flaws, I still managed to enjoy the story. It was interesting enough to keep me wanting to turn the page to find out what happens next.

Also, having low expectations at the outset was certainly an advantage. Jun 16, Shru NJ rated it really liked it. Another adventure book from Clive Cussler.

As the name suggests, this book revolves around Egypt and pyramids. The hero of this book is Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala.

The story is about a big corporation in Egypt conducting illegal activities under cover of a water plant. Somehow or the other Kurt and Joe are present around a site where some catastrophe takes place and then they get involved in unearthing the mystery.

There are some secrets of ancient Egypt civilization which were discovered by French during their invasion but kept hidden from the world because of its dangerous nature.

The same secrets were found by a group of people with evil intention and used to threaten some of the world leaders to establish their power over entire North Africa.

They resorted to some of the inhuman ways to get people to follow them. Several times during their search for the truth, Kurt and Joe were in danger for their lives but it was sheer luck that they came out of it unhurt.

At the climax, the bad guys were killed and peace was again reinstated in North Africa. About the author: Clive Cussler is an American author who has written books about everything that is mysterious.

I wonder to what extent the author has extended his knowledge base to know about most of the mysteries around the world. Each book that I come across is based on different area, different civilization, different era.

Sometimes he comes off as too perfect and know-it-all. It was much more subtle this time. It also felt like there was more room for Joe to step up and have some of the spotlight.

It was a really nice change of pace. I was a little sad to see that Paul and Gamay where not in this book very much. I would have liked to have had more of them.

The last few books had moved away from the ancient artifact plot tie in, which was a shame because that was such an important part of the NUMA charm.

I was so happy to see the return of the ancient artifact theme in this book. Dec 21, Pranta Ghosh Dastider rated it really liked it.

Non-stop action and chase. There is a threatening villain, nice plan to make the world go wrong, and every other thing. This being the first book from Clive Cussler I have ever read, I don't have a reason to compare it to his other works, so not disappointed by planned redundancy if there exists any.

But I do think Graham Brown has done lot of work in it. I read his other book and liked that too. What makes me happy about this book is, there are lots of characters who gets involved.
